Toplady’s hymn first appeared as four lines in an article by Toplady entitled “Life a Journey”, which was published in the Gospel Magazine for September 1775 as: “Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in thee! Foul, I to the fountain fly: Wash me, Saviour, or I die.”

All these hymns, together with "O precious blood, 0 glorious death" (Death of Christ), are in D. Sedgwick's reprint of Toplady's Hymns, &c, 1860. Legend says that Toplady wrote the hymn during a stormy incident in England. While traveling along the gorge in Burrington Combe , he was caught in a fierce storm and took shelter in a gap in the gorge, where he wrote the original lyrics. There we sang a couple of brilliant hymns by Augustus Montague Toplady (1740-1778 – he was only 38 when he died!). Wikipedia tells me that he was an Anglican cleric and hymn writer from Farnham in Surrey.

2013-02-27 · Augustus Montague Toplady wrote over 100 poems and hymns. As his death neared, he sensed God’s presence. “O what a day of sunshine this has been to me! I have not words to express it. It is unutterable. O my friends, how good is God!” The day he died, he was calling, “Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly!”

Oddly enough, the hymn based on his  12 Aug 2007 It is also hymn 370 with the title “From Whence This Fear and Unbelief?” in Hymns of Grace and Glory (BJUP | MCBC) (edited by Joan J. Pinkston  Music by Thomas Hastings; words by Augustus Toplady.
