Print. Sofu Teshigahara was born in 1900 as the eldest son of Ikebana artist Wafu Teshigahara. Starting to take lessons in Ikebana from childhood, he gradually began to attract attention for his outstanding talent however, in questioning the formalistic traditions of Ikebana, he broke away from his father to establish the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in 1927. Having watched the documentary Teshigahara and Abe yesterday, filmed for the Criterion Collection in 2007, I was looking forward to watching this film because Teshigahara’s father, Sofu Teshigahara, had created a new style of ikebana in 1927 when he founded the Sogetsu-ryu school, of which Teshigahara would eventually become the Grand Master in 1980.

In 1927, Sofu Teshigahara founded the Sogetsu School. From the 1950s to 70s, Sofu energetically held exhibitions and demonstrations in Europe and America and Time magazine called Sofu the “Picasso of flowers.” In 1979, Kasumi became the second Iemoto. Rule 49 of the Sōgetsu school of modern flower arrangement, founded by Ikebana master Sofu Teshigahara, states the core tenets of Teshigahara’s philosophy of art: “The four principles of freshness, motion, balance and harmony.
